79-Yr.-Old $8.9 Million Lottery Winner Plans To Buy New Mattress

CityNews.ca Staff
Toronto has a new multi-millionaire who just wants one thing - a new mattress.

Meet Margherita Porporo, a 79-year-old Italian-Canadian, who doesn't speak a lot of English. But she understands the universal language of money as well as anyone and on Thursday, she came to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming headquarters to pick up her cheque for a cool $8.9 million. (The actual amount is $8,948,707, but what's a few bucks when there's that much at stake?)

The senior was the sole winner in Wednesday's Lotto 6/49 draw, claiming the top prize on a quick pick. She wants to share most of the money with her grown children, three boys and a girl, along with her nine very fortunate grandkids.

Porporo is long since retired and intends to keep on playing the games of chance. She's been entering the lottery twice a week for years, and had previously won a few bucks. But she never expected anything like this.

There are a few things this 79-year-old grandma wants to do with her newfound fortune. She plans to buy a bungalow. And she's going out to purchase a new mattress, something her family has been telling her to get for some time. Now, at last, she seems sure she can afford it.

It doesn't appear, though, that she plans to keep the money there.

There's a Lucky New Millionaire

PAWTUCKET — In the midst of hard economic times, a trip to a Woodlawn store appears to have made a millionaire out of one person — though he or she has yet to reap the reward.

According to a Rhode Island Lottery statement, a winning ticket for Wednesday night's $94.7 million PowerBall jackpot drawing was sold at the Li'l General Store at 600 Main St.

As of press time, however, the winner's identity was not known, as no one had come forward to claim their prize, which came to a grand total of $1 million.

The prize would have been a “mere” $200,000, but the patron plunked down an extra buck for the lottery's Power Play feature. Thanks to that extra purchase, the winnings were multiplied five times, to a total of $1 million.

Reached by phone on Thursday afternoon, however, a Li'l General employee said they had not heard about anyone purchasing a winning ticket out of their location.

The Rhode Island Lottery statement indicated that Wednesday's drawing yielded two other winners, each of whom won $200,000. Both of those winning tickets were apparently sold at Paul's Shell on Reservoir Avenue in Cranston. According to the Rhode Island Lottery statement, each winner managed to match five numbers, but not the PowerBall number.

According to information published on the Rhode Island Lottery Web site, nine lottery prizes valued over $10,000 apiece had not been claimed as of May 1, with the earliest of winnings having been drawn on May 7, 2008. That winning ticket had been purchased at Sam's Food Store, located on Eddie Dowling Highway in North Smithfield. Winning tickets are valid for one year. Presuming the North Smithfield winner did not come forward by yesterday’s deadline, the prize will have been forfeited.

Two other such unclaimed prizes had been won in Pawtucket, the Lottery site said. One was reportedly purchased at Fox Grocery on Benefit Street and drawn on Feb. 29. The other was purchased at Borderline Liquors on Newport Avenue and drawn on January 9, 2009. According to the Lottery site, all of the aforementioned unclaimed prizes were valued at $10,000.

Lady Luck - Woman wins 5 Lottery Cash Prizes

HARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Brenda Bailey is on a roll. Since September, the 59-year-old South Charleston woman has won five West Virginia Lottery cash prizes, totaling $167,600. All of Bailey's winnings came from the Lottery's instant games. Her latest win is her biggest — the $100,000 top prize in the Price is Right game.

Bailey claimed that prize Tuesday. Her other winnings from various instant games include $50,000 in April, $1,000 in March, $6,000 in January and $10,000 in September.

Lottery Director John Musgrave said none of his staff can recall a similar streak of luck.

Never argue with a woman

Someone sent me this and I just couldn't resist sharing it:

One morning, the husband returns the boat to their lakeside cottage after several hours of fishing and decides to take a nap.

Although not familiar with the lake, the wife decides to take the boat out. She motors out a short distance, anchors, puts her feet up, and begins to read her book. The peace and solitude are magnificent.

Along comes a Fish and Game Warden in his boat. He pulls up alongside the woman and says, 'Good morning, Ma'am. What are you doing?'

'Reading a book,' she replies, (thinking, 'Isn't that obvious?')

'You're in a Restricted Fishing Area,' he informs her.

'I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing. I'm reading.'

'Yes, but I see you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment. I'll have to take you in and write you up.'

'If you do that, I'll have to charge you with sexual assault,' says the woman.

'But I haven't even touched you,' says the Game Warden.

'That's true, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment.'

'Have a nice day ma'am,' and he left.

MORAL:
Never argue with a woman who reads.
It's likely she can also think.
